Laura,
You don't say what state you are located in but if you've read other loan mod questions in this forum, you'll know that state regulators, the FTC, and other federal regulators recommend that homeowners should never pay any up-front fees and be on the lookout for high-pressure sales tactics. In California, it's illegal to charge upfront fees for loan mods.
If I were you, I would start your loan mod journey by calling a HUD-approved nonprofit housing counselor, like Bill suggested. You can speak with a certified counselor by calling 888-995-4673. They can evaluate your housing options, open lines of communication with mortgage lenders, negotiate a loan modification, and help you with household budgeting, all at no cost.
For more info on loan modification, check out the LABBB's Facebook page at:

Specifically, check out the "Notes" on various loan mod topics and info that can apply to homeowners anywhere.

YES it is a scam!! We paid 2 law groups money and did not get a loan modification with either. I did file complaints with the BBB and I did get a partial refund with one of the law firms. So please please, do not throw your money away!

They said they would help us out and they didn't and took 2000 k for their fee anyone that posts that they did has to work for them. My husband was dealing with them at first. I ended up calling them up and they answer executive office and it's sounds like a party going on in the background. They promised to give our money back if they couldn't help and our house is under foreclosure and our credit is more destroyed. Contact the Florida attorney general. It is illegal to charge upfront fees operating out of Florida. Real loan mods wont charge you. We found out too late.

This company did nothing for me, but take my $1000. Do not trust them. The Federal trade commission is already doing an investigation on them. If you have been scammed by them call FTC 877-382-4357 and file a complaint, the more complaints they get the better. They will then start a civil action against them
